Humboldt County Democratic Central Committee Resolution Urging the City of Eureka To Establish a Civilian Police Advisory Board September 12, 2007 Whereas there have been several incidents in recent years where individuals have died as a result of confrontations with the Eureka police, and Whereas significant public concern has arisen over these and other incidents, and doubt has been expressed by some members of the public about the appropriateness of police actions and procedures and the effectiveness of police training, and Whereas the difficult and danger of police work is increased when a potion of the community fears or feels hostility toward law enforcement personnel or doubts the correctness of police procedures and training, and Whereas public safety is enhanced and law enforcement personnel are safer and more effective if the police work within an environment of widespread public confidence, Therefore be it resolved that the Humboldt County Democratic Central Committee urges the City Council and Mayor of Eureka to establish a Civilian Police Advisory Board composed of a broad cross section of respected and knowledgeable community members for the purpose of advising appropriate City authorities on police training and procedures and, if requested by the City Council or Mayor, reviewing incidents of alleged police misconduct, with the purpose of issuing findings and making recommendations. ####
