Humboldt County Democratic Central Committee Resolution on HR 2758 July 11, 2007 Whereas the Northern California coastal area is part of one of the four major upwelling regions in the world and is a coastal area that has historically supported extremely abundant and productive marine life, and Whereas the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration states that, while upwelling regions make up only one percent of the world's oceans, they contribute approximately half of the world's fish catch, and Whereas drilling for gas and oil off the Northern Coast of California could cause serious harm to the unique and productive ecosystem and abundant marine life found off the coast, including the fish many local North Coast economies depend upon, and Whereas North Coast Congressman Mike Thompson (D-CA) has introduced a bill that will permanently prohibit oil and gas drilling off the coasts of Mendocino, Humboldt and Del Norte counties called the Northern California Ocean and Coastal Protection Act (HR 2758) to provide protection to the unique and productive marine environment along Northern California's outer continental shelf, Therefore be it resolved that the Humboldt County Democratic Central Committee strongly urges Congress to approve HR 2758 and applauds and endorses Congressman Thompson and his long standing resolve and practical leadership regarding protecting the natural resources and economies of Northern California. ####
